The Rideau Osgoode Karate Club participated and did very well in this tourament (full results pending). Our Catherine Jacubzek and Emily from the Y club came together to form a team for the Team Kata category. This was on the spot and we made a special note of this camaraderie as it demonstrates exactly what we are trying to encourage and instill in the kids with these tournaments: friendship and fun! We were all very proud of these girls.
October 22, 2006
On Sunday, October 22nd, 2006 the Rideau Osgoode Karate Club held--in conjunction with Rising Sun Martial Arts--a black belt grading. As usual, it was a lot of work, but a lot of fun. The grading lasted six hours, and included lots of basics, Katas, and sparring.
Four students from the Rising Sun Martial Arts Dojo were graded to Shodan (first degree Black Belt) in Goju Ryu Karate and the instructor (who holds a third degree in another style) was graded to Nidan (second degree Black Belt) in Goju Ryu. On the ROKC side of things, Cynthia was graded to Nidan and Dylan was graded to Shodan (Dylan had previously held a Junior Black Belt rank). Finally, Sensei Ron and Sensei Wayne were both graded to Yondan (fourth degree Black Belt).

On June 8th, 2006 Sensei Albert was presented with his Rokudan (Sixth Degree Black Belt) by his long time instructor, Professor Georges Sylvain (Judan). Sensei Albert began his martial arts training with Sensei Sylvain in 1967 and has remained a dedicated student over the many years. Recently, Sensei Albert helped Sensei Sylvain produce his outstanding book, "Can-Ryu Jiu Jitsu 2000: A 50 Year Journey Into The Study And Evaluation Of Self-Protection Techniques".
Sensei Albert's students and family were in attendance for the low-key award ceremony during which Sensei Sylvain lauded Sensei Albert's dedication and his success at building a real family-oriented environment in his Dojo.
Congratulations Sensei Albert, and thank you for your many years of dedication to the Rideau Osgoode Karate Club and its members!
